Ikigai Lodge

Overview

Ikigai Lodge holds prime position in Myoko Kogen, right across from the Akakura Kanko lift station and an easy walk to the bars & restaurants of Akakura Onsen village.  The Myoko Kogen ski resort offers the ideal holiday for lovers of powder snow, boasting an average of 13 metres of snowfall in the season... in fact Myoko claimed the snow crown for the 2018-2019 season with 17 metres of snowfall!  The Myoko area is made up of several ski resorts, linked together by shuttle bus. Akakura Kanko, Akakura Onsen, Ikenotaira Onsen, Suginohara and Seki Onsen are a few of the resorts you will get to ride. It is also handy for day trips to the neighbouring ski resorts of Tangram Circus/Madarao Mountain & Lotte Arai.

Ikigai is a bed and breakfast lodge with 8 rooms.  Bedding configurations include a 2-bedroom Japanese style suite and a mix of studios and suites that offer flexible bedding to support travellers of all kinds. Some Rooms feature private balconies, additional lounge space, and ensuite bathrooms. Regardless of your choice in accommodation, your stay at Ikigai Lodge will be a memorable one.

Myoko Kogen  is located one hour north of Nagano and from Tokyo we recommend catching the Nagano Shinkansen and then the Kita-Shinano train line to Myoko Kogen Station.  The Ikigai Lodge staff will then pick you up and bring you to Ikigai, making the transition easy and convenient. Best of all, from Tokyo, the trip takes a little bit under two hours!

If you are looking for a great place to enjoy Japanese snow, culture and an excellent time away, Myoko Kogen ticks all the boxes. A great mountain, English-speaking ski schools, fantastic onsens, traditional restaurants, small bars and a flourishing nightlife means there is something for everyone at Myoko Kogen.

Myoko Kogen Ski Resort

Myoko Kogen is a laid back Japanese village located in the Niigata prefecture about 1 hour train from Nagano station.  The resort has 9 resorts with the main resort being Akakura Kanko which is a traditional Japanese village where most of the accommodation, restaurants, ski hire and atmosphere is located.

Some of the other popular ski resorts in the area which are all within a half an hour drive from Akakura Kanko include Myoko Suginohara, Mt Tangram, Madarao, Akakura Onsen, Seki Onsen and Ikenotaira Onsen.

Suginohara has the longest ski run in Japan which at 8.5km’s is a decent leg burner especially when there is a significant amount of fresh snow. Apart from Suginohara, Akakura Onsen has one of the steepest runs in Japan suitable for advanced level skiers and snowboarders. Tree skiing is also allowed in Myoko Kogen and backcountry / side country tours can also be arranged with a qualified local guide. Beginners and Intermediates will also be able to find suitable terrain for their abilities with 30% green runs and 40% Intermediate runs on average throughout the Myoko Kogen area.

The Niigata Prefecture averages 12-16 metres of snow per season with a fresh dump of snow falling every 3 days on average. Make sure you pack your powder ski’s and snowboards or simply hire one from the many rental shops located in Akakura Kanka.

A fab family trip. The lodge location - literally across the street from the ski lift and 3 minutes walk from another one was a HUGE plus. Also, it was awesome to be just up the street from the main dining/shopping area of the village of Akakura, which had a great vibe.  Fun Read more...
